While attending East Lyme High School, Dr. Matton enlisted in the United States Army National Guard as a means to serve his country and to aid in paying for his college education. Shortly after graduation, he completed Army Basic Training in Fort Jackson, SC and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, GA. While on reserve duty for his unit in Connecticut, Dr. Matton attended the University of Connecticut where he received a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and a master’s degree in Cell Biology before matriculating into the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. While in dental school he received several scholarships for academic achievement and clinical skill.  Dr. Matton was also heavily involved in community service providing medical and dental care to underserved communities as part of the Urban Service Tract, as well as participated in biomedical research leading to a publication characterizing the effects of growth factors on the regeneration of bone.

After graduating with his dental degree, he advanced to his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
